Event narrative

Cruise ship traveling across the gulf stream to Miami shared a picture via social media of a waterspout forming from a thunderstorm.

Wider weather episode

Deep easterly flow allowed for ample moisture to advect into South Florida. This moisture, combined with an upper level low centered over the northern Bahamas resulted in scattered showers and thunderstorms to develop. A few strong storms over the Atlantic waters produced gusty winds and waterspouts.
