Wider weather episode

Warm and moist surface conditions with temperature/dewpoints in the 80s/50s F respectively contributed to between 500 and 1000 J/kg of MLCAPE across much of south-central and southeast Montana. In addition, increased forcing for ascent from an upper level disturbance approaching from Idaho, along with effective shear of 40-50kts, resulted in the development of severe thunderstorms. This, combined with steep, low and

mid-level lapse rates, helped produce damaging wind gusts and severe hail.
