Event narrative

On the morning of July 19, 2021, between 10 and 10:30am CDT, a line of sub-severe thunderstorms caused a canoe with two occupants to capsize. Neither were wearing life jackets and one of the two occupants drowned. The incident occurred on Loon Lake east of Crane Lake, Minnesota, within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW). Estimated wind speeds along the line of storms were 25-30 mph based on nearby observations.
