There was an upper ridge centered over southern Nevada and an upper trough over Missouri. A weak cold front moved into West Texas and Southeast New Mexico. Moisture and instability were across the area. Atmospheric lift was enhanced across the higher terrain and along the front. These conditions resulted in thunderstorms that produced hail across the area.
