Event narrative

A kitesurfer died as a result of injuries suffered after being blown off course by gusty winds from thunderstorm outflow/downburst winds. The kitesurfer was launched by the winds into a beachfront condo building near Loggerhead Park on Fort Lauderdale Beach. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died shortly afterwards.

Time was taken from a surveillance camera which captured the incident.

Wider weather episode

A well-defined upper level disturbance moved west from the Bahamas to across South Florida on August 25th and 26th, helping to trigger several periods of strong thunderstorms over the Atlantic waters which spread west over the local waters, then over South Florida and the Gulf of Mexico waters at several times during this period.
