Event narrative
A strong thunderstorm associated with a cold front developed between Port Mansfield and the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge late in the afternoon on December 18th. The Realitos Peninsula TCOON site recorded gusts of 34 knots between 6:54 PM CST and 7:18 PM CST.
Wider weather episode
A robust cold front swept through the Rio Grande Valley/Deep South Texas region and the Lower Texas coastal waters late in the afternoon of December 18th. A line of broken showers and thunderstorms developed along the cold front as it headed southeast through the region. Some of the thunderstorms produced strong winds that were recorded at some of the buoys and Texas Coastal Oceanic Observation Network (TCOON) sites as they moved through.
