A shortwave progressing over the region provided favorable ascent aloft to quickly develop a sub-1000mb cyclone over the northern Great Lakes during the afternoon and evening of 12/21. Strong SSW flow ahead of the cyclone along a front/convergence boundary developed a heavy band of snow that resulted in 1 per hour snowfall rates or greater during the afternoon, dropping 7 in Germfask by 8pm on 12/21 and 8.5 was measured a few miles outside of Newberry.
