Event narrative

A cold front brought a line of thunderstorm that swept through the Lower Texas Coast. A peak gust of 36 knots was recorded at the Texas Coastal Ocean Observing Network (TCOON) site at Rincon del San Jose (RSJT2). With the recorded gust of 36 knots at RSJT2, which is within 1 mile of Gulf Waters, and Buoy 42020, it is reasonable to expect the nearby Gulf Waters out to 20 NM between Port Mansfield and Baffin Bay also experienced similar gusts.

Note: The measured wind gust of 36 knots is equivalent to 41 mph.

A strong cold front plowed through the Lower Texas Coast the evening of January 9th. A line of showers and thunderstorms developed along the cold front as it marched south and brought several observations meeting Marine Thunderstorm Winds criteria of gale-force gusts to area waters.
