Event narrative
A cold front brought a line of showers that swept through the Lower Texas Coast. A peak gust of 38 knots was recorded at the Texas Coastal Ocean Observing Network (TCOON) site at Realitos Peninsula (RLIT2) at 10:30PM CST. Several gusts at or above 34 knots were recorded between 9:42PM CST and 10:54PM CST. Additionally, a gust of 36 knots was reported at the South Padre Island Coast Guard Station, TX (PCGT2) at 10:42PM CST as the line moved south.
Note: The measured wind gust of 38 knots is equivalent to 44 mph.
Wider weather episode
A strong cold front plowed through the Lower Texas Coast the evening of January 9th. A line of showers and thunderstorms developed along the cold front as it marched south and brought several observations meeting Marine Thunderstorm Winds criteria of gale-force gusts to area waters.
