Event narrative

One report of three inches near Reedsville was received fairly early in the event.

Wider weather episode

A deepening trough ejected from the Midwest towards the Mid-Atlantic from January 6th into the morning of January 7th. Precipitation spread into the area during the afternoon and evening of the 6th with moist advection and jet ascent ahead of the trough. Thermal profiles supported an all-snow scenario. The rapid transition of the trough axis east allowed for the quick intrusion of drier air and increasing subsidence, which resulted in a swift west-to-east decline in precipitation early on the 7th.

In general, 3 to 6 inches of snow were observed south of the Mason-Dixon Line in northern West Virginia. Higher totals were observed in the ridges of Preston and Tucker Counties, where as much as 15 inches was seen.
