A broad area of isentropic lift across the area resulted in a light wintry mix on the morning of January 14th thanks to a warm layer aloft. Later that day the primary forcing from an inverted trough approached the area, enhancing the the background thermodynamic lift. The heaviest snow occurred in the evening an overnight hours as snow rates neared one inch per hour. This resulted in a broad area of six to ten inches of snow across much of the state, with pockets of a foot or more in some locations.
