Coastal Walton storm history

Seven swimmers were rescued from rip currents at Miramar Beach by the beach patrol. Five were rushed to a local hospital. Two of the victims died.

Storm surges of eight to ten feet caused extreme beach erosion along the coast. Many beach structures were damaged or undermined, and many sand dunes were lost. Reported by the Walton County EMA.

High surf caused minor to moderate beach erosion. Twenty feet of beach was lost in some locations.

Minor coastal flooding and beach erosion was reported along U.S. Highway 98 from Santa Rosa Beach to Sandestin.

Storm tides of two to three feet were observed along the coast. The high surf closed all beaches. No beach erosion was reported.

Rainfall from Fay varied between one and three inches. There were several downed trees and power lines throughout the county.

Several inches of rain during the past few days combined with heavier amounts to the north caused flooding along the Choctawhatchee River and nearby low-lying areas. Many creeks and streams were running over their banks. Several county and dirt roads were closed by high water.
