A stage 1 water shortage was in place for South and Central Maui since September 2024 due to lack of surface water flow.

There was little to no rainfall reported for most of Maui County, except localized windward areas. A stage one water shortage remained in effect for Upcountry, West, South, and Central Maui since September of 2024.

Surf heights up to 26 feet created strong currents, beach run up, and made navigating channels dangerous.

Large breaking waves up to thirty five feet created strong currents, beach runup and dangerous shoreline conditions.

Buoy data showed warning level surf.

Hookipa Beach Park was closed due to high surf, as waves were overtopping a break wall into the parking lot and other areas beyond the break wall.

A period of extreme drought was recorded through December 9th, with severe drought conditions then lingering through the rest of the month.
