Lower St. Martin storm history

Wind gusts to near hurricane force and heavy rainfall lead to numerous downed trees and power lines across the parish.

Hurricane Gustav moved across lower St. Martin Parish, damaging homes and businesses. The hardest hit area was Stephensville. The school had two air conditioners blow off the roof, and a radio tower next to the school lost the top 20-30 feet of the tower.

Light snow began during the early morning hours across lower Saint Martin Parish with heavy snow moving in after sunrise. Accumulations ranged from 6 to 8 inches.

A prolonged drought that began earlier in the year peaked during the first week of November. Thunderstorms returned to lower portions of Saint Martin Parish by the 10th with more regular rains following after that date.

Wind gusts in lower Saint Martin were in the 60 to 85 mph range while Ida moved across Southeast Louisiana. Trees and power lines were blown down. Minor damage to roofs was reported.

Rain changed over to sleet during the morning of the 15th. Around a quarter of an inch of accumulation occurred.

Tropical storm force wind gusts down many trees and caused scattered power outages.

A light dusting of snow and sleet over a thin glaze of ice occurred during the 16th. Area travel was interrupted and area schools canceled classes for a couple days. Accumulation was around one tenth of an inch.

The event started with light freezing rain with and gradually mixed in with sleet. Ice accumulations during the event were generally under one tenth of an inch with sleet accumulations under a tenth of an inch as well.

Freezing rain began during the morning of the 24th and lasted into the afternoon. Ice accumulation ranged from around one quarter of an inch to around four tenths of an inch.

Scattered trees and power outages were reported across Saint Martin Parish Tuesday through Thursday August 28-30th. Maximum power outages were around 2600 customers parish wide. A few homes had minor roof damage.

Isolated power outages were reported due to a few trees blown down across lower St. Martin Parish. One house had a tree fall on it.

Hurricane Ike resulted in a 7-8 foot storm surge, similar to Hurricane Rita in 2005. Roads in the Stephensville area had water over them, but little came into the houses.
