Reports of 3 to 5 inches across the Detroit Lakes area combined with winds gusting to around 40mph severely reduced visibility during daytime hours leading to increased impacts.

Blizzard conditions prevailed through the late morning and into much of the afternoon, with visibility down to 1/4 mile and winds frequently gusting over 35 mph.

Visibility well below 0.25 mile with winds sustained at or above 35 mph. Numerous highways were shut down in MN.

Temperatures fell into the teens below zero across the area, with winds of 15 to 25 mph; wind chills were as low as 40 below zero.

Wind chill values fell as low as -44 degrees during the evening and into the overnight hours as reported by NDAWN Mesonet.

From 6 to 11 inches of snowfall occurred across the county, mainly through the evening and overnight hours.

Most locations received a mix of from 0.10 to 0.20 inches of sleet or freezing rain, from 3 to 5 inches of snow, and winds sustained at 25 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph.

Much of the county received from 5 to 10 inches of snow, from the late morning through early afternoon of the 5th.

Numerous 1-inch branches were blown down. Gusty winds followed after the morning rain, with a peak wind measured at 48 mph at the nearby Detroit Lakes Airport.

From 1 to 4 inches of fresh snow and winds gusting from 45 to 55 mph combined to produce widespread blizzard conditions.
