Seas were building ahead of a frontal system approaching on Tuesday night. Seas were up around 12 to 14 feet in the Yaquina Bay Bar when the boat the Mary B II tried to cross. Three fisherman died.
A couple and their young daughter took a trail down to rocks which overlook the ocean. A large wave washed over the rocks and swept the couple off the rocks and into the ocean. Both were taken to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.

A southwesterly swell of 20 to 25 ft with a period of 17 seconds was observed across the coastal waters. A 5 year old girl was hospitalized after she was hit by a sneaker wave near South Jetty Beach in Florence, OR.
A large, long period swell produced a high-end sneaker wave threat to the Oregon coast October 17-19. A young girl was caught in a sneaker wave on the beach near Yachats, OR and was fortunately saved by a stranger.

A tsunami generated by an eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'api volcano reached the U.S. West. A tsunami wave height of 0.7 feet was measured at the Newport tide gauge on the 15th. No reports of damage or injury are known at this time.
