Event narrative

The wind gust occurred at the Oregon Inlet Weatherflow site. Strong non-thunderstorm wind gusts were observed on the Outer Banks behind a rapidly strengthening low pressure system that moved across the area. Other wind gusts ranged from 60 to 65 mph across Hatteras Island.

Wider weather episode

Thunderstorms developed and moved through Eastern NC during the morning hours. A few storms became severe and produced damaging wind gusts across the region. Strong non-thunderstorm wind gusts developed in the afternoon behind a rapidly strengthening low pressure system that moved across the Outer Banks.
