Distant Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto combined to produce large long period swells that inundated parts of Hatteras Island. Highway 12 was closed for several days around the high tide cycles near Pea Island. Five homes collapsed in Buxton on September 30th.

The Weatherflow in Avon, NC measured a 67 mph peak wind gust at 9:42 pm EST. The Weatherflow in Frisco, NC also measured a 67 mph peak wind gust at 6:36 pm EST. Widespread wind gusts of 60-65 mph were common on Hatteras Island.

NC Highway 12 north of Hatteras village was closed due to severe ocean overwash and multiple dune breaches. The closure was between Sandpiper Lane to the north and Elizabeth DR SR1272 to the south.

The wind gust occurred at the Oregon Inlet Weatherflow site. Strong non-thunderstorm wind gusts were observed on the Outer Banks behind a rapidly strengthening low pressure system that moved across the area. Other wind gusts ranged from 60 to 65 mph across Hatteras Island.
