What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The tornado initially touched down along US Hwy 321 just north of the town of

Gaston. The tornado brought down several large branches and damaged a highway

speed sign. The tornado continued to move northeast near Ball Park Road. The most

significant damage began near the Lexington County and Calhoun County line along

Dixon Rd and Savany Hunt Creek Rd. The tornado then continued into Calhoun Co where it dissipated just before reaching the Congaree River.

The wider storm

An upper level disturbance and the interaction of surface boundaries, along with increasing moisture, led to thunderstorms that developed and moved east across the region during the afternoon. Sufficient atmospheric instability and shear led some of the thunderstorms to produce damaging wind and tornadoes, along with locally heavy rain.

Began near Gaston (33.8261, -81.0973).
