Event narrative

Snowfall reports of 6 to 7 inches were largely confined to the along the North Shore of Lake Superior with just over 7 inches being reported near Grand Marais.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure moving out of the Northern Plains on the 17th brought heavy snow to portions of the North Shore. Favorable southeasterly winds streaming across Lake Superior into the higher elevations along the shore led to increased snowfall during the overnight hours of the 17th into the 18th. Snowfall upwards of an inch per hour were briefly observed with snow totals of just over 7 inches being recorded northeast of Grand Marias.
