Event narrative

A maximum wind gust of 89 mph was reported at the Wyoming Department of Transportation weather sensor at Red Canyon. The nearby Wind River RAWS site had a maximum wind gust of 80 mph.

Wider weather episode

An area of low pressure swept across Wyoming and brought areas of heavy snow and high wind. The heaviest snow fell in the western mountains where 12 to 16 inches of snow fell in the Teton Mountains and Yellowstone National Park. To the East of the Divide, strong southwest winds aloft mixed to the surface to bring high wind. Along the Eastern Slope of the Wind River Range, gusts as high as 89 mph were reported at Red Canyon near South Pass. In the lower elevations, wind gusts to 70 mph at Lander, WY brought down a tree that blocked a road for a few hours. A maximum wind gust of 60 mph was reported along Wyoming Boulevard to the south of Casper, WY.
