Trained spotter and COOP in Gustavus reported over 5 inches of snow by 7am Thursday, then changed to rain in the afternoon. Measurements at Glacier Bay National Park were much higher, estimating 9-11 inches by 10:15am. Snow continued to fall into the afternoon, but 2 additional inches compacted and did not add to the depth.
Wider weather episode
Low and associated frontal band moved across the northern panhandle after a cold break, causing snow. A brief period of enhanced snow fall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour early Thursday morning was followed by a mix with with rain through the afternoon for the Icy Strait area. The northern inner channels saw snow last longer.
