Event narrative
A mother and baby were overtaken by large surf and washed into beach logs at Telegraph Creek north of Shelter Cove. Both victims were rescued. Surf was estimated to be around 20-30 feet at the time of the incident.
Wider weather episode
Deep-layer westerly flow occurring along a zonally oriented quasi-stationary frontal boundary yielded a multi-day atmospheric river event across Northwest California during late December. Widespread impacts due to heavy rain and strong winds were observed across the region.
