Event narrative

Snowfall totals varied greatly across the southern part of the county with reports ranging from 3 to 11 inches. A high report of 12 inches was reported near Tofte.

Wider weather episode

A large area of low pressure moved across the Upper Midwest in the days leading up to the Christmas holiday, bringing a storm with three distinct phases. The first phase occurred on the 21-22nd with widespread snowfall across the region of 3 to 7 inches. Higher amounts to around a foot were recorded along the North Shore in southern Cook County due to lake enhancement and orographic effects. Later phases of the storm included dangerous wind chills and blizzard conditions.
