Event narrative
Blizzard conditions were recorded at Grand Marais for a period of three hours during the late evening hours of the 22nd.
Wider weather episode
The final phase of the storm during the days ahead of the Christmas holiday featured blizzard conditions along the North Shore. A second low developed over the Ohio Valley and moved into the region as it deepened. This led to strong northwesterly winds along the North Shore with gusts of 50 to 70 mph being common from the Twin Ports to Grand Portage. These winds lofted the snow from earlier in this system, along with some light new snow, and created blizzard conditions from Silver Bay northward along the shore. A maximum gust of 82 mph was recorded just offshore by a passing lake freighter near Grand Marais during the height of the event.
