Between 1237CST and 1405CST a mesonet station located 1 W of Canyon measured wind gusts between 58 and 60 mph.

A strong upper disturbance advanced quickly from California to over southeastern Colorado, causing an area of low pressure to developing in southwestern Kansas. With strong winds aloft associated with the upper disturbance and the quickly developing low pressure present, clearing skies allowed for the stronger winds aloft to be brought to the ground. As a result, strong winds occurred in the Panhandles; Amarillo led the way with a 67 mph gust measured at the airport.
