Event narrative

An observing station near Manistique measured three tenths of an inch of ice accumulation from freezing rain. Utility companies also reported many downed trees and power lines resulting in power outages impacting several thousand customers. School start times in Manistique were delayed two hours due to the ice storm.

Wider weather episode

A warm front lifting north from the Central Plains and Lower Great Lakes brought showers and thunderstorms across the area which turned to widespread freezing rain late from the 4th into the early morning of the 5th across west and central Upper Michigan.
