Wider weather episode
A potent storm system moved through during the day on August 7, stemming from a strong upper level low moving across Southeast Canada and New England. On the morning of the 7th, SPC upgraded far eastern Kentucky and points to our east and northeast to a Moderate Risk level for severe weather, with the main concern being strong to destructive winds. According to the SPC discussion: A severe weather outbreak is possible across parts of the eastern U.S. today with widespread damaging winds, locally destructive, and isolated tornadoes as the greatest threats from the southern and central Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic States.
Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings and tornadoes were issued across eastern Kentucky on this day, ahead of the approaching cold front. Thankfully, no tornadoes resulted, and only a handful of reports of minor wind damage and large hail.
