A strong area of low pressure passed by to the west, causing southerly winds to overrun colder air near the surface. This resulted in freezing rain across the higher elevations in the Allegheny and Potomac Highlands to the Virginia Blue Ridge where temperatures were just below freezing. Ice accumulation totaled around a trace to a few hundredths.
