Event narrative

A weak shower moved over Bozeman overnight on the 5th, which resulted in a heat burst in town. A personal weather device on Sourdough Ridge Rd (Ambient Wx station) measured a gust in excess of 60 mph, with temperatures nearby rising by nearly 10 degrees over 10 minutes overnight. Broadcast media reported tree damage in Bozeman from the heat burst.

Wider weather episode

Weak convection the morning and afternoon of April 5 translated two gusts in excess of 58 mph to the surface across Southwest Montana. The overall convective environment was weak from a thermodynamic perspective, but strong southerly winds ahead of an approaching trough made up for the thermodynamic shortcomings.
