Event narrative
Slightly above normal monthly rainfall totals in severe (D2) drought affected areas of southwestern Crawford County resulted in a downgrade to moderate (D1) drought through April.
Wider weather episode
Long standing abnormally dry conditions resulted in severe (D2) drought affecting parts of southwest into central Wisconsin at the onset of April. Since initial drought issuance in the middle of June 2023 to April onset, near 20 of total liquid precipitation fell in the severe (D2) drought affected areas in western and central Wisconsin. This was 6 to 12 below normal for the extended time period. Several storms during April provided multiple days of heavy rainfall and up to 10 of snowfall accumulation in parts of western Wisconsin. As a result, severe (D2) drought receded in southwest Wisconsin while persisting in parts central Wisconsin.
