Strong northerly winds developed at Kivalina during the early afternoon hours. The Kivalina (PAVL) ASOS reported a peak wind gust of 64 mph.

High pressure over the Chukchi combined with a strong thermal trough over the Interior produced a strong pressure gradient over the Chukchi Sea coast, resulting in high northerly winds developing at Kivalina.
