Event narrative

A combination of heavy snow and wind gusting to over 30 mph led to the closure of Highway 28 over South Pass for several hours.

Wider weather episode

The first substantial winter storm of the season moved in from the west and brought heavy snow and difficult travel conditions to portions of central Wyoming. The heaviest snow fell in the favored northeast flow upslope locations of the Wind River Range, Lander Foothills, and southern Natrona County. The highest total snow was 14 inches on Casper Mountain, with up to a foot of snow in and around the city of Casper. Locations in and around Lander received anywhere from 6 to 12 inches of new snow. A combination of heavy snow and winds gusting over 30 mph resulted in the closure of South Pass for several hours.
