Event narrative

Between one and four inches of snow were reported around Grayson County, with the highest amounts confined to the high elevation areas including Mount Rogers and Whitetop. Wider weather episode

A clipper system tracked from the Ohio Valley into the Central Appalachians Thursday into Friday. The associated upper level disturbance enhanced lift across the area, resulting in snow beginning to fall on the morning of January 3rd and continuing through the day.

Bands of brief heavy snow brought localized higher amounts of snow, and northwest winds behind the passage of the clipper system resulted in upslope flow and additional snowfall.
