Strong northwest winds in the wake of another arctic cold front reinforced very cold air over the North Carolina mountains during the early morning hours of the 22nd. Temperatures in the single digits and teens and winds gusting from 20 to 30 mph resulted in minimum wind chill values of 0 to -10 during this time. Stronger winds and temperatures at or below 0 caused wind chills of -15 or colder above 5000 feet.
