Perhaps 100,000 trees or more were blown down, with hundreds of trees down on homes, vehicles, and power lines. Frequent gusts up to 80 mph occurred, with occasional gusts of 100 mph on exposed high elevation ridgetops.

Major flooding, the worst since 1977, destroyed 23 homes, wiped an entire trailer park out, and damaged 200 homes. The height of the flooding was between midnight and 2 am on the 8th.

Although heavy rain tapered off across much of the area prior to noon, major flooding persisted across most of the major basins across Mitchell County through the afternoon. This included the North Toe River, the Nolichucky River, and Cane Creek.

A stream gauge on Cane Creek in the Bakersville area exceeded its established flood stage after 3 to 4 inches of rain fell across the area in around three hours. Multiple roads in Bakersville and vicinity were inundated, including a portion of Highway 226.
