The wider storm
Plummeting snow levels in the wake of a cold front interacted with strong northwest upslope flow to result in snow shower development beginning during the afternoon of the 16th across the counties bordering Tennesse. The snow showers continued through the overnight hours before beginning to wind down during the morning of the 17th, before tapering off during the afternoon. Total accumulations of 3-6 inches, with locally higher amounts were reported in the higher elevations along the Tennessee border. Accumulations up to 3 inches occurred in the valleys northeast of I-40, while valley locations beneath the Smokies saw little more than a dusting.
