Event narrative

A report was received on mPing of quarter size hail in northern Lynn County.

Wider weather episode

Warm temperatures, surface convergence along a dryline, and an unstable atmosphere contributed to scattered severe thunderstorms across the South Plains and western portions of the Rolling Plains late in the afternoon into the evening hours of the 17th. A very dry sub-cloud layer allowed one of these storms to produce wind damage in the city of Lubbock while also producing hail up to two inches in diameter. Thunderstorms dissipated off the Caprock but produced a couple of heat bursts while dissipating. The first heat burst occurred near Hackberry producing a wind gust of 60 mph. The second occurred near Aspermont with a Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet site measuring a wind gust of 59 mph.
