Event narrative

A thunderstorm over Butte produced hail estimated close to one inch in diameter and caused flash flooding near Schley Avenue. Over an inch of rain fell in one hour, overwhelming local storm drains and leading to a flooded basement, an overflowing manhole, and significant water ponding on streets and in nearby parking lots.

Wider weather episode

Slow-moving thunderstorms, enhanced by anomalously high atmospheric moisture, brought periods of heavy rain and large hail to portions of west-central and southwest Montana.
