An axis of anomalous moisture and instability had set up across the eastern combined Panhandles, and this allowed a few scattered strong to severe storms to pop up along the Texas and Oklahoma state line. A more organized storm over Lipscomb County eventually emerged and went on to generate a 78 mph wind gust at the Lipscomb mesonet observation site west of town.
