Event narrative

Winds gusted 59 to 65 mph across portions of Grayson County during the early afternoon of the 29th between Whitetop and Rugby.

Wider weather episode

High winds occurred after the passage of a strong cold front as a pressure gradient increased between a departing low pressure system and a building high pressure system. Gusts of roughly 60 to 65 mph were measured by equipment across some of the higher elevations of southwest Virginia between the early afternoon on the 29th through the pre-dawn hours of the 30th. The strongest measured gust, 65 mph, occurred near Rugby in Grayson County during the early afternoon of the 29th.
