A strong cold front moved across southwest Indiana, followed by a ridge of high pressure that originated from Siberia, bringing prolonged sub-freezing temperatures beginning on the 23rd. Breezy northerly winds with gusts over 20 mph caused wind chills to plummet between -5 to -12 degrees during the evening hours and continued into the morning of the 24th. A lull in the dangerous wind chills occurred on the 25th when a major winter storm was ongoing.
