Drought in Cimarron, Oklahoma
Drought April 1, 2026 – April 30, 2026 · Cimarron, Oklahoma
What the National Weather Service wrote
Drought conditions worsened across the Oklahoma Panhandle during the month. The month began with the region in Severe Drought (D2) but by around the 21st of the month, Extreme Drought (D3) expanded into much of Cimarron County from the west. The region continued to see a lack of significant rainfall during the month. Rainfall amounts of around 0.25 inches to 0.3 inches fell during the month. However, Cimarron County ended April with precipitation deficits of around 1.0 to 1.2 inches. Precipitation deficits over the past 120 days were 2.5 to near 3 inches.
The wider storm
Throughout April, drought conditions worsened significantly across the entirety of the Oklahoma Panhandle. The region started the month entrenched in Severe Drought, but persistent moisture deficits drove a widespread expansion of Extreme Drought as the weeks went on. The prolonged dry spell not only depleted ground moisture but also dried out vegetation, creating dangerous fire weather conditions.
Measurable precipitation was thoroughly lacking. Total rainfall amounts across the three counties hovered between a mere 0.2 inches and 0.8 inches. While Beaver County managed to see slightly more rain than the rest of the Oklahoma Panhandle, it still only amounted to less than one inch. All three counties ended April with noticeable short-term deficits. However it is long-term deficits that truly highlight the compounding dryness over the first third of the year. The region faced 120-day deficits ranging from 2.5 inches up to 4.5 inches. The ongoing lack of rainfall left fuels incredibly dry across the landscape. In Texas County specifically, these parched conditions set the stage for fire ignition; when dry thunderstorms rolled through the area, lightning strikes sparked wildfires in the vulnerable, dried-out vegetation.
