The wider storm
A cold front associated with an upper-level system moved into the local area from the northwest on March 7th. As the upper trough weakened, the front began to stall across the region. Ample moisture was already in place across south Louisiana and south Mississippi, as evidenced by the afternoon KLIX sounding, which showed record precipitable water values. In addition, sufficient instability aloft supported persistent and robust thunderstorm development along and ahead of the boundary. The combination of these factors resulted in flash flooding across portions of southwest Mississippi.
Began near Newtonia (31.0900, -91.2200).
