High Wind March 16, 2026 · Southern Cook, Minnesota
What the National Weather Service wrote
A peak gust of 58 mph was recorded by the KGNA Bay of Grand Marais ASOS during the event.
The wider storm
An area of low pressure developed across the Southern Plains on the 14th and moved northeastward into the Great Lakes by the morning of the 16th. Additionally, a weak cold front dropped south out of Canada ahead of this system. Snowfall was not as heavy as expected as the system tracked a bit further south and a severe weather outbreak across the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys prevented moisture from reaching into the Upper Midwest. Snowfall amounts were generally under 6 inches, but a high report of 7.6 inches was received from near Wrenshall. Additionally, very strong winds occurred along the North Shore with a measured gust to 58 mph at Grand Marais.
