High Wind April 23, 2026 · South Laramie Range Foothills, Wyoming
What the National Weather Service wrote
Frequent gust of 60 to 70 MPH were recorded along Interstate 80 and 25 from WYDOT sensors. A maximum gust of 78 MPH from a Union Pacific Railroad sensor (14 WSW Cheyenne) was recorded at 9:30 AM MDT on 4/23.
The wider storm
A strong trough moving into the Rockies created a long duration high wind event across most of southeast Wyoming and parts of western Nebraska. A strong sea level pressure gradient lead to strengthening winds aloft, with strong subsidence and mountain waves helping get these strong winds down to the surface.
