What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

This second tornado of the episode, was the first tornado in northeastern Morgan County, an EF-1 which tracked to the east-northeast for almost three miles, from a neighborhood on the south-southeast side of Mooresville, to a point about 3 miles east-southeast of the center of the town. Touching down in the White Lick Creek floodplain, the spin-up snapped or uprooted hardwood and softwood trees in the neighborhood west of Rooker Road from Wilson Drive to Daniel Street, as well as east of Indiana Route 144 when the tornado tracked along, and then to the north of Neitzel Road. Peak winds were 105 mph.

The wider storm

On April 27, 2026, an upper-level shortwave trough and an associated deepening surface low-pressure system tracked across the Midwest. South of the low's path, a sufficiently unstable warm sector surged into central Indiana, characterized by rich boundary-layer moisture and strong low and deep layer wind shear. This setup supported multiple rounds of severe convection resulting in numerous damaging wind gusts or large hail reports. Three tornadoes also occurred between Jackson and Morgan Counties, along with flash flooding in Knox and Marion Counties.

Began near Mooresville Arpt (39.5931, -86.3668).
