What EF2 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF2 is considerable damage: roofs torn off well-built houses, mobile homes destroyed, large trees snapped or uprooted, consistent with estimated gusts of 111–135 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

The first damage produced by the tornado occurred on Texas Gas Road, where a large tree was uprooted and other smaller trees were downed. Farther east along Cole Lane, an attached garage was destroyed and a large tree was downed onto a house. In addition, a roof was lifted from another garage and several trees were snapped at their trunks.

The tornado strengthened and proceeded east near East Laughery Creek Road, where it completely destroyed a house and two outbuildings. Debris from these buildings was strewn east along the path of the tornado across a large field. Based on this damage, estimated wind speeds were around 130 mph in this area, and the damage also resulted in a Tornadic Debris Signature on the Wilmington, Ohio radar at this time.

The tornado continued toward Alta Vista Ave, where a large number of hardwood trees were snapped. The tornado then moved across Laughery Creek and into Switzerland County at 2317EST, about 2.8 miles southeast of Dillsboro. The tornado continued east across Ohio County, eventually moving into Boone County, Kentucky, before dissipating at 2326EST, just across the Ohio River near Belleview Road.
