The wider storm
The combined Panhandles were located between low pressure to the north and high pressure to the south. This allowed for late afternoon and evening storms to move from northwest to southeast across the region in a warm, moist and unstable environment. Supercell and multicell clusters of storms developed and affected the central and eastern portions of the Texas Panhandle during the later afternoon and evening hours. Large hail, damaging winds and flooding occurred across the region.
