The wider storm
Multiple thunderstorm cells were observed training across the Flat Rock Community, located just northeast of the town of Mt Airy in Surry County. Cells began crossing the area at around 5:45 pm EDT, and continued passing across the area repeatedly until around 8:15 pm EDT before rainfall became light in intensity. Rainfall rates rose to as high as 5 inches per hour multiple times through the event. Despite dry antecedent conditions with D2: Severe Drought highlighted for the northern half of Surry County by the U.S. Drought Monitor, MRMS FLASH data estimated the rainfall reached the 142-year Average Recurrence Interval ceiling for a 3-hour duration in the Flat Rock area, with rainfall totals reaching 120 percent of the 3-hour Flash Flood Guidance. CREST Unit Streamflow was unimpressive however, reaching into the 300 to 400 cfs per mi^2 by around 8:00 pm EDT. The heavy rain produced runoff around 6 inches deep across Highway 103 from a nearby hillside drainage.
